Brest was elevated to city by Henry IV in 1593. The four centuries of turbulent history that followed are read in its urban, military, economic and territorial development. Four centuries that gradually, with occasional breaks, modeled the face of a unique city.
In the Middle Ages, the history of Brest merges with the history of the castle. Then Richelieu made a military port of it. Brest will be developed around its arsenal until the second half of the twentieth century.
