Venice’s history is based on a paradox: how a few small islands of the northeast of the Adriatic, surrounded by wetlands, gave birth to the capital of a maritime empire and trade, and to the largest port in the Middle Ages? From the XVI century, the city enters into a political and economic decline but in spite of that it knows a very strong cultural influence. In 1797 Bonaparte put end to its independence. The city then joined the kingdom of Italy in 1866. Venice’s attraction continues even today: many tourists are charmed by the originality of the site and the beauty of its monuments, results of a prestigious history.
